TERM 01
Autopilot
Autopilot is the state where a behavior runs to completion without a decision behind it — and the moment you notice it happening is the moment you just caught yourself.
Most of your day runs on it, and that isn’t a defect — it’s your brain being efficient about things it has done a thousand times. The trouble starts when the efficient route quietly overrides the thing you actually meant to do. You don’t fix autopilot by hating it; you catch it, one moment at a time. Noticing is the whole skill, and noticing is not the same as blaming yourself.

TERM 02
Caught in 4K
Caught in 4K is a way of reviewing your own autopilot moment like game tape — Said, Footage, Actually after, Replay verdict, Next attempt — watching your own footage kindly instead of pretending it didn’t happen.
It borrows the meme that means undeniable evidence of yourself, then points the camera where it belongs: at you, held by you. Half the fix is just seeing the clip clearly — specific enough to laugh at. The camera is always in your hand; nobody else is filming. What you catch is a clue, never a verdict on the kind of person you are.

TERM 03
The missing frame
The missing frame is the roughly ten seconds between an impulse and the action it triggers — a gap wide enough to fit exactly one question: what am I actually after?
Autopilot is good at editing this frame out so cleanly you never see it go. Everything I build lives inside it. Make the frame a little longer and you get a vote you didn’t have a second earlier. That’s the whole game: making that one frame long enough to think in.

TERM 04
Agency vs control
Control is the blocker, the streak, or the patch that forces an outcome; agency is noticing early enough to get a vote on it.
Control works right up until you’re motivated enough to route around it, and you always eventually are. Agency is quieter and more durable — it doesn’t need to win every round, it just needs to show up in the frame before the action does. Blocking still has a place; sometimes protection buys you the seconds you need. But a patch holds a system together without changing it, and patches are for software. People get explanations.

TERM 05
You’re the audience
You’re the audience is the movie-theater reframe: you can feel everything the character feels and still know you’re not the character — which means you can feel the whole scene without following the script.
You cry at films. The tears are real, and some quiet part of you never forgets it’s a film. Your thoughts run that same movie all day, except that one you tend to believe without checking the credits. Same screen, same seat — you’re allowed to feel the entire scene and stay in your chair.

Apps designed to be deleted
An app designed to be deleted is one whose success metric is the user graduating and uninstalling it — the uninstall is the five-star review.
If you need a tool forever, it didn’t strengthen you; it just renamed the dependency. So every app I build ships with a built-in exit and a graduation screen that means it. Yes, it’s a strange business model — my accountant has questions. But an app you keep out of habit is exactly the thing I’m trying to help you notice.

Why do I do things I don’t want to do?
Usually not because you’re weak — because the behavior is doing a job for you: relief, escape, stimulation, certainty, a small hit of control. The costly habit and the useful job are both real at the same time, so find the job before you try to fire the habit. The longer version lives in the manifesto. If the pattern is causing real harm to you or the people around you, that’s the moment to reach for stronger support than any app.

Why do I open my phone without thinking?
Because opening it has become one of the most rehearsed moves you own, so it runs on autopilot — no decision required. A gap opens, the hand moves, and you surface minutes later wondering who sent it. The fix isn’t more willpower; it’s catching the reach in the missing frame and asking what you were actually after. Some people file that under mindfulness; I just call it watching your own footage.

How do I stop doomscrolling without blocking apps?
Treat the scroll as a clue, not a character flaw: what was the feeling right before your thumb moved — boredom, dread, an undefined next task? Name it in the frame and give it a truer answer than the feed, whether that’s a pause, a clearer next step, or closing the tab on purpose. Blocking can help in a pinch, but it patches the symptom while agency works the cause. Catch one scroll in 4K this week and the pattern starts to show itself before it runs.

Why don’t app blockers work for me?
Blockers rely on control — a wall between you and the thing — and a wall holds only until you’re motivated enough to climb it, which you eventually are. They also skip the actual question: what was the app doing for you in that moment? That’s the difference between control and agency; a blocker patches the behavior without touching what drives it. Blocking still earns its place as short-term protection — just don’t mistake the patch for the fix.

How can I catch myself before a habit takes over?
You aim for the missing frame — the few seconds between the impulse and the action — and make it just long enough to fit one question: what am I actually after? You won’t catch every round, and you don’t need to; catching it early enough to get a vote is the win. Reviewing your last slip in 4K, kindly, trains you to spot the next one sooner. If a habit feels genuinely out of control or dangerous, please treat that as bigger than a self-help trick and talk to a professional — an app is not enough for that.
